Share drives and the repositories of document and content management systems are less navigable than the wild West, resembling jungles after only a few years. The reason is quite simple, unstructured data is not treated like data. Yet for all structured data can do for us by enabling transactions and helping us understand what just happened to our money, it represents facts, givens, about our world—facts that we manipulate to create knowledge and understanding.
